My old friend, Harrison, had lived in theMediterranean for many years before he returned toEngland. He had often dreamed of retiring inEngland and had planned to settle down in thecountry. He had no sooner returned than he boughta fine house and went to live there. Almostimmediately he began to complain about theweather, for even though it was still summer, itrained continually and it was oftenbitterly cold.After so many years of sunshine, Harrison got ashock. He acted as if he had never lived in England before. In the end, it was more thanhe could bear. He had hardly had time tosettle down when he sold the house and left thecountry. The dream he had had for so many years ended there. Harrison had thought ofeverythingexcept the weather.

4. Almost immediately he began to complain about the weather, for even though it wasstill summer, it rained continually and it was often bitterly cold.

語言點(diǎn) 比較學(xué)習(xí)：continual，continuous, constant, perpetual
continual意為“持續(xù)不斷的，頻繁的”，指一段時(shí)間內(nèi)多次發(fā)生(如雨季下雨);continuous意為“連續(xù)的”，一般為不間斷的(如水流);
constant意為“忠實(shí)不變的”;
perpetual 意為“永久的”。
5. I After so many years of sunshine, Harrison got a shock.
在陽光下生活了那么多年的哈里森對(duì)此感到驚奇。
語言點(diǎn)1 after在此為介詞，連接時(shí)間狀語，after作連詞可引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語從句。 語言點(diǎn)2 get a shock感到震驚
6. He acted as If he had never lived in England before.
他的舉動(dòng)就好像是從來沒有在英國生活過一樣。
語言點(diǎn) as if = as though好像(常常用在虛擬語氣中)
She spoke to me as if she knew me before.
她和我說話，就好像早就認(rèn)識(shí)我似的。
The brothers looked as though they had been quarreling.
兄弟倆看起來好像剛吵過架。
