My old friend, Harrison, had lived in theMediterranean for many years before he returned toEngland. He had often dreamed of retiring inEngland and had planned to settle down in thecountry. Afterso many years of sunshine, Harrison got a shock. Heacted as if he had never lived in England before. In the end, it was more than he couldbear. He had hardly had time tosettle down when he sold the house andleft thecountry. The dream he had had for so many years ended there. Harrison had thoughtof everythingexcept the weather.

語言點(diǎn) 本句中包含hardly...when... “一……就……”固定搭配，句中and連接并列謂語動(dòng)詞。

他多年來的夢(mèng)想從此破滅。
語言點(diǎn) 該句主語包含一個(gè)定語從句。
10. Harrison had thought of everything except the weather.
哈里森把每件事情都考慮到了，唯獨(dú)沒考慮到天氣。
語言點(diǎn) 比較學(xué)習(xí)：
except, except for except for指從整體中除去一個(gè)細(xì)節(jié)或一個(gè)方面，所除去的與整體并非一類;
except后接的詞一般屬于整體，指在整體中除去同類的一個(gè)部分，比如該句中的weather就是應(yīng)該考慮到的everything中的一部分。
